First Line Friday! #1

Over at Fiction Writers Group, we host an event every Friday, where as the title suggests, community members post the first lines of their active paragraphs, scenes, chapters, and stories. We take a bunch of these each week and post them up for the world to see!

We find this exercise really helps the community to work on their ability to create an enticing hook for the reader- that first line really does say it all! Why not come along and have a go? It’d be great to have you!

JM Ames

When I found my daughter in the still-smoking rubble, her left leg was missing. Nothing remained but shredded ribbons of bloodied flesh and a shattered stump of bone.

Agonized screams pierced the air around me, but I barely heard them.

Graphic, tragic, and straight to the point, JM Ames’s first line pulls the reader out of their seat and into the thick of things.

Caralyn Young

How’d she get into this mess? Marilyn looked down at the worn clothing the studio had given her. She was given only one change of clothes, a pack to carry essentials, and an herbal kit with a book to learn how to help her companions on their quest.

Well, what’s going on here? And what’s with the herbs and the companions? We don’t know yet, but we certainly want to!

Leann McCoy

Considering the place at 1004 Persimmon Street was well over a hundred years old, Everleigh Jenkins supposed it could have been worse. Then again, it could have been better — she wouldn’t be stuck where she was at now in her life.

Can anyone else feel a sense of relation to Everleigh Jenkins (beautiful name, by the way), or is it just us?

Stacy Teal

April Perez felt the sharp sting in her hand when it made contact with Derek Young’s face. It wasn’t her intention to slap him, but after seeing him flirting with her sister Lizzy, all purpose of a civil conversation was gone.

I guess in some circles, flirting with the sister-in-law is considered wrong, right? Well we instantly know April Perez doesn’t like it in this first line!

Some great first lines our first week running this event. Come and join the fun! JOIN FWG
